Our take
The Ninja CREAMi went viral thanks to 'protein ice cream' recipes: mix milk, protein and a little sweetener, freeze it, and the machine turns it into creamy ice cream. It works differently from a classic ice cream maker: instead of churning while it chills, it shaves down a base that's already frozen.
That has one upside and one downside. The upside is a very creamy result, and you can make almost any flavor, including fruit sorbet. The downside is planning: the base needs about 24 hours in the freezer, so it's worth keeping a few pints frozen.
It's loud while it runs and takes up counter space, but among viral kitchen products it's one of the few people keep using months later.
Pros
- Very creamy ice cream from simple bases
- Great for high-protein or sugar-free recipes
- 7 different programs
- Dishwasher-safe parts
Cons
- Bases need about 24 h in the freezer
- It's loud
- Takes up counter space
